My good friend Adam Flick over at Universal Music graciously sent me some tickets to an up and coming British pop star named James Morrison. The show was last night (Monday) at this small venue called Chop Suey in the Capital Hill area and while it was completely packed I dont think there were more than a few hundred people there. While the CD is fantastic I have to say this was one of the better live shows I’ve been too. I’d characterize James Morrison somewhere along the lines of James Blunt but with a much harder edge. This guy’s voice just wails in real life. The CD really doesn’t even do it justice. Thanks Adam for the tickets!! What a show.

I’m sitting here on Thursday night at 9:00pm in Seattle watching the first practice of the 2007 F-1 season. I don’t have a lot of friends who follow formula 1 in Seattle but I’m interested to meet those of you who love the sport. I know you’re out there! Drop me a line at kellysmith [at] kellymith.com and tell me who you are and who you think has a shot at the title for ‘07. This is going to be an exciting year. Schumacher is gone and Kimi Raikkonen is now at Ferrari. New teams like Spyker Ferrari are sure to keep things interesting and last years World Champ (Fernando Alonso) is now at McLaren.
The first race is in Melbourne Australia this Sunday and I can’t wait. I miss my friends in Europe with whom I used to watch the races with but this time of year still gets me all excited. Email me if you’re one of the few who understand.

I’m pleased to be able to announce support for another fellow RealNetworks alumn in that we have announced an investment in Shelfari this week along with Amazon.com and others. This article points out the approximate investment of about $1 million. Shelfari also announced the formation of its advisory board, which includes Alex Algard of WhitePages.com; Brad Feld of Foundry Group; Geoff Entress of Madrona Venture Group; Andy Sack of Judy’s Book; and (me) Kelly Smith of Curious Office.
Congrats to Josh and team for a great job getting over this important hurdle.

Well I’m a bit late in posting this but it is true. The first company we developed internally at Curious Office (and where I am the CEO) just raised a pile of money.
The round was led by German publishing conglomerate Holtzbrinck though there was also participation from Silicon Valley venture capital firm Crosslink Capital.
Seattle angel investors — including former Expedia Chief Executive Erik Blachford, PhotoDisc co-founder Tom Hughes and Second Avenue Partners co-founder Nick Hanauer — also participated. As did the European Founders Fund, the venture firm created by the German brothers who sold Alando.de to eBay in 1999.
Pretty exciting huh? Here’s to a big 2007.
