Welcome

Technology, design, friends and photos from Seattle.

My 2 cents.

Curious advice on a tee

No, I probably won’t actually produce these for sale. It’s just that we at Curious Office are sometimes asked to give advice and I realized that the best advice is probably the same stuff you’ve already heard over and over. So, I wanted to try to communicate it in a fresh way to hammer the point(s) home. Oh, well, ok…maybe the “sleep less” bit is nearly original. But probably not.

CoolSpotters: Our first investment in 2008

coolspotters

Yesterday I mentioned that Curious Office made another small investment - this time in Fanzter - the guy behind a new concept called CoolSpotters. A lot of people emailed me trying to figure out what Fanzter does. The answer is that Fanzter is the development company behind CoolSpotters. Probably too early to say what they are up to but I’d encourage you to go sign up at http://www.coolspotters.com, enter your email address so you can be notified of the launch. Second Avenue Partners was the primary and lead (BIGGEST) investor.

Friends from Monaco and New York visit us for the weekend

Monaco

Old friend John Palmer and his lovely girlfriend Susan fly in and visit us for the weekend. Mary Goodman and I host a few days of festivities including this casual Sunday morning brunch at Mary’s place in the Old Queen Anne Schoolhouse.

Hey, a new layout for KellySmith.com

Yep. It’s true. I designed the last Wordpress theme and some things just didnt work right. For example, I had all kinds of things that didnt quite work right when people used older versions of some browsers. And, I also like to have a lot of columns on the front page that show for those users who have really big monitors. I have a Mac 30″ display and I LOVE it when people design sites that take advantage of the available screen real-estate that the user has available. This was the BIGGEST motivator to redo this thing.

So, when you view this 4-column page with your window width set to at least 1280 pixels, you’ll see all 4 columns arranged horizontally across your screen. If your window is 1024 pixels wide, you’ll see 3 columns. And if your window is 800 pixels wide (or less), you’ll see 2 columns. Hmm…

Where do the columns go?
The outer columns do not disappear—they simply and seamlessly drop to the bottom of their preceding column. Each column will always have a full-height vertical border. Folks with narrow browser windows will never know what they’re missing. In fact, they will not miss a thing.

This site has been tested to do exactly as I describe in following browsers without puking all over itself.

IE5.x, IE6, IE7
Firefox 1.x (and higher)
Safari 1.2x (and higher)
Opera 9.x (and higher)

The lost formats of media

This is an AMAZING compilation of the various media formats we’ve had to endure over the last 70 years. From the Twelve Inch Record to the TelCan to the 9 Track Open Reel Tape - you’ll learn more about recording format types than you ever knew existed. Cool.

FlowrPowr

FlowrPowr

This work isn’t new. I think I did it over a bottle of red wine back in 2004. But, I lost it on an old hard drive and found it again.

De La Espada

De La Espada

If you don’t know De La Espada furniture you should cruise over to their website and check it out. Be sure to check out their sister brand, Atlantico as well. It’s similar in style to Seattle’s own Henrybuilt.com and overall very hard to find fault with this stuff. Solid wood and very, very cool.

Monocle magazine

Monocle

I just discovered Monocle magazine. Launched in February 2007, Monocle is a global briefing covering international affairs, business, culture and design and it is VERY well done. Most new magazines don’t make it but this one is a seriously professional affair. I wish them well. Get your hands on it!
